NCMIR Scientist Named Top 10 Science Photographer in the World Photography Awards

February 15, 2008 — NCMIR researcher Thomas Deerinck has been named to the top 10 shortlist in the professional science photography category in the inaugural 2008 Sony World Photography Awards.  The top 10 in 11 diverse categories were announced on February 15th from amongst 25,934 amateur and 44,641 professional entries by the World Photographic Academy, a judging panel of over one hundred of the industry’s elite.  Each member judged the categories relevant to their field of expertise, ranging from architecture to science, portraiture to photojournalism.  The top 3 in each category will be named on April 14th and will be invited to attend the awards ceremonies from April 21st –25th at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France.  The winner of the “L’iris d’Or” World Photographer of the Year will be named on April 25th and will be entered into the World Photographic Academy and receive a $25,000 cash prize. The Sony World Photography Awards showcases the world’s best images taken by the most renowned photographers as well as the yet undiscovered.  Supported by hundreds of the industry’s top photographers, critics, gallery owners, directors, founders and other industry experts, the Sony World Photography Awards is the first awards show of its kind, providing an unprecedented international platform in the culturally important and diverse world of photography.  The aim of the World Photography Awards is to continuously unearth the images of the future while giving tribute to the vision of the past.
